Interchess version 2.1.6 Copyright (C) 1998-1999 Henry Wrightson All Rights Reserved =========================================================================== One of the main resons for my changing Interchess from shareware to freeware was the number of outstanding, insoluable issues which make it unsaleable. If its free nobody can complain about the fact that it doesn't work in all cases. This document details the problems that I have encountered and in all cases the solution is somewhat irregular and in many cases not suitable to everyones taste. ISSUE 1 ======= Because of the graphical nature of the user interface and the way in which Visual Basic compensates for the user changing the font size in the display properties control panel, (it simply scales the window and all it's controls), if you do not have the font size set to Small Fonts, (Normal - 96 dpi), all the window graphics will appear to be too small and in the case of the main chess board, the window will not fit on the screen at 800x600. This is a major problem and I am as yet unable to fix it so the only solution is to prevent Interchess from running unless Windows font size is set to Small Fonts. If it is not, you will be warned when you run Interchess and it will not run. If you get an error message refering you to this issue you can change the font size to Small Fonts by following these steps; 1) Click the Windows Start button and select Settings and then Control Panel. 2) Double click on the Display control panel 3) In the Display Properties dialog selec the Settings tab and click the Advanced... button 4) From the Font Size drop down list, select Small Fonts. 5) Click Ok and Ok again. You will then be asked to reboot. The downside of changing from large fonts to small fonts is that all windows objects will appear a little smaller than before. If you are running a 15" monitor at a high resolution, (1024x768), things may get to small to see, so can I take this oppertunity to suggest you change your screen resolution to 800x600, a much more sencible resoltion for a 15" monitor. You can always make the fonts appear bigger by going to Appearance tab of the Display Properties dialog and changing the fonts for everything. I'm sorry this solution requires changing something you will have got used to but I cannot figure out another fix. ISSUE 2 ======= Load time can sometimes be a little long. For various mail transport type reasons, it can sometimes take a hand full of seconds before there is any evidence that Interchess is launching. This is caused by attempts to establish a connection with the Windows mail subsystem. Basically, if it is a little slow to run, give it 30 seconds before desiding that it has crashed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4th September, 1999 Henry Wrightson Interchess@HenryWrightson.In2Home.co.uk Interchess@HappyValley.Screaming.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
